Mapping the World of Alternate History Wars
How to use Mapimator to visualize 'What If' scenarios, fictional empires, and hypothetical borders.

From "What if the Roman Empire never fell?" to "What if Germany won WWII?", alternate history is a massive genre on YouTube and gaming. Mapimator’s 3D engine is the perfect tool to build these tactical overlays, whether for a documentary-style video or a fictional war briefing.
Redrawing the Borders
The Magic Wand is your best friend here. Even though it selects modern countries, you can combine them to form "Fictional Empires."
- Example: Select all the countries of the modern Spanish Empire and color them in a uniform "Imperial Red."
- Set the Fill Opacity to 0.6 to make the new borders feel "authoritative."
Visualizing Fictional Pushes
- The Arrows: Use the Shape Tool (Arrow) to show where "The Neo-Empire" is invading. Set the animation to Draw so the arrow grows during the transition.
- The Dashed Lines: Use dashed lines to show ceasefire lines or demilitarized zones that exist in your alternate timeline.
Choosing the Vibe
- The Technical Look: Use the Ink (Dark Matter) map style for a "high-tech tactical briefing" feel.
- The Antique Look: Use the Terrain map style. This highlights natural boundaries like mountains and rivers, which often define alternate history borders.
